KickActs interviews “weareTheBigBang”
Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and were you can be found online.
Luis- Hello, my name is Luis and I like short walks on the beach. I also play guitar for the band “weareTheBigBang” yes, one word and no we didn’t name it after that watered down “that 70’s show” that’s currently on. We’re more of a Neil deGrasse tribute band I’d say. Check us out here…
Who are your musical heroes and influences? Why?
Elaine– Prince, how can you not love Prince?! But seriously though, my mom was in love with him so I listened to and watched a lot of Prince growing up, including his sweet 80’s/90’s movies! Prince is a musical beast that has thoroughly had me captivated since my youth due to his style of performing, song writing, guitar slaying, and of course his sweet threads. I often find myself thinking, “what would Prince do?!”
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in the music business?
Elaine- Learn how to network, nurture your relationships, and don’t burn any bridges. I honestly feel like 90% of this business is who you know. Unfortunately, it’s rare that artists make it on shear talent alone these days.
What piece of advice did you ignore that you wish you hadn’t?
Luis- I didn’t ignore it per say but it definitely took a while for it to make sense. When I first moved to LA, I was very fortunate to meet and chat with Tim Nordwind of the band “Ok Go”. He mentioned something around the lines of “don’t lose your sense of humor kid”. It really came in handy about a year ago… Shit gets real out here.
Do you have a greatest gig story or worst gig horror story you’d like to share?
Luis- At Coachella, right after we played, I pooped in an empty Budweiser box because the lines to the porta-potties where ridiculously long. I just had to do what I had to do I guess…
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of peckers or boobs? Make sock puppets? Sit in the dark and eat Cheetos?
Luis- I’m a pretty big conspiracy dude, I tend to stay up late talking to extra dimensional beings… Earth is like “tinder” for them.
What do you think about the current music scene or lack of? Care to address that?
Luis- I dig it, just because EDM and hip-hop are in right now doesn’t mean that there’s no scene. People are lazy, there’s a lot of good music out there you just have to take the time to find it. Go now! Go find a scene!
Do you think reality shows like American Idol, X Factor and The Voice have helped or hurt the music industry as a whole?
Elaine- Honestly, I think a little bit of both, but mostly hurt. The exposure from those shows sound pretty amazing, but in reality a fan that is found and made pretty much overnight from such exposure seem as though they are not quite in it for the long haul and are easily distracted. And then in a few months they are on to the next potential winners when the new season roles around. At the end of the day, I would much rather have 1000 real genuine fans who have grown with you as an artist, who come to shows, who share music and buy merch than “thousands” of over night fans who will forget all about you and your music with the next season of episodes. Another thing to take into consideration are the restrictive contracts that contestants are forced to sign to compete on these reality shows. Many of them are very similar to 360 deals that are commonly offered by labels. I’ve heard so many horror stories from past contestants where they can’t release any new material and don’t have any control over their careers, just as if they had been shelved by a major music label.
What is your opinion of unauthorized music downloads?
Luis– It’s a good problem to have and I actually think it’s vital in the beginning of any career. It will always exist and I’d be flattered if I heard someone was illegally downloading or sharing our music.
Tell us something about you/each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear.
Oliver (keys)- Is always on time which is weird
Cheyenne (Vox)- sleeps with the TV on
Elaine (Vox)- HUGE fantasy/ sci-fi nerd
Kyle (drums)- actually enjoys driving the tour van
Enrique (bass)- got the whole band addicted to that special chocolate
Luis (guitar)- I was vegetarian for a whole year
Hypothetical situation. You’re on Gilligan’s Island and you get to hook up with only one of the survivors… Which one and why?
Luis- Never watched it. My dad watched the Mexican version with really bad Spanish overdubs. He seemed to like it though. I’m pretty sure he’d bang the hottest one or maybe all of them.
Do you know what a vinyl album is and have your ever purchased one? If so, what was it?
Luis- What young hipster people buy nowadays to feel cool and special.
You’re marooned on an island with Justin Bieber. Do you choke him out the first night in his sleep or what?
Luis- I like the kid… I’ve run into him a few times in Hollywood. Once he even looked in my direction and kinda smiled at me or at least someone behind me. I’d feel like we’d get along. Take the best shirtless selfies together.
What is your opinion of Miley Cyrus?
Luis- I would love to have a threesome with her and Hanna Montana!
Which would you rather hear in concert? Lip-synching or real vocals?
Chey- real vocals
Elaine- Real vocals, always!
Luis- Real Boobs
Who, or what, is the next big thing?
Luis- My child with Hanna Montana
One artist you can’t get enough of and can’t live without is… Why?
Chey- I will forever be in love with Michael Jackson because of the passion in his music. Regardless of his personal life/media, when he hit the stage he left everything there. He always gave his all and that is what I always try to mirror when I’m performing
Confession time. Share a secret about yourself.
Luis- I am obsessed with Sam Walton. Like Obsessed!!!!!!!!
Favorite movie of all time and why?
Luis- Robocop, the original. It’s stupid and I’m in love with Peter Weller. He never got much play after that but he’s a dream boat. The new Robocop remake fucking sucked, a little piece of me died when I watched the new one.
Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!
Everyone and their Grandma should check out these bands! They are all good friends and are amazingly delicious
- Chappo (NYC)
- The Diamond Light (LA)
- The Suffers (Houston)
- Maceo Paisley (LA)
- Soul Progression (Portland)
- Oh Honey (LA)
- Semi Precious Weapons (LA)
- Big Language (LA)
Too many to name but yeah… Music is cool! Oh and we have a new EP coming out in June! I expect everyone there! Place to be announced!

Bo Derek. Is she still a “10”?
In 1979, this poster was everywhere. At 25, Bo derek was the next Farrah Fawcett? Or so it seems. There was the iconic scene in the movie 10 that shows her running down the beach in slow motion. Some people thought the movie was the worst movie of 1979 but it did catapult her into the limelight. Married to John Derek, a guy that was 30 years her senior. He basically invented Bo Derek. In Hollywood, I guess anything is possible. They remained married for 22 years until his death in 1998. After the movie 10, Bo Derek appeared in two issues of Playboy magazine and made a few more movies and then disappeared from the scene. Now 35 years after “10”, long gone are the corn rows she wore but at 58 years old Bo Derek and still stunning and reflecting back on her life…

Jacob Morgan
My name Jacob Morgan of Vicksburg, MS. I was an Army 10th Mountain Infantryman 3rd Brigade Combat Team. My convoy was struck on May 9, 2011 in the Arghandab River valley. leaving me with a shattered right leg and traumatic brain injury. I was hospitalized for two months. This is a picture
Of Angelina Jolie visiting me in the hospital. ( figured more people would pay attention that way.) After I was released from the hospital I was sent back to Ft. Drum, NY to a rear detachme…nt unit. I still could not walk. Note that when I was medivaced out of Afghanistan I had nothing except what was left of my uniform. I had troubles at Ft Drum trying to get medical attention after I returned. Mental and Physical. I basically rehabilitated my own leg and could not overcome the mental thoughts in my head. I tried to get help but there was always an excuse from the chain of command. I am not proud to say this but I turned to drugs to cope with the pain. This ultimately got me discharged. Once I got was discharged I was hit with a statement of charges for a total of $13,000 from the government for equipment that burned in the vehicle and that I never left Afghanistan with. They have garnished my check for 3 years now and I have not been able to find anyone that can help. I can’t afford the legal fees and time that it will take so I want my story to go viral and maybe reach that one person in this country with the kindness and power to help me. Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser movie trailer
Here it is. Looks like he is copying off the success of the “Hot Tub Time Machine” and Austin Powers franchises by going back in time. I thought the first Joe Dirt was dumber than peanut butter on cornbread and it looks like this one is even worse. I guess it’s over my head since I don’t get it. David Spade hasn’t been funny since Chris Farley passed away…

Phoenix Hill Tavern Closes (Louisville KY)
The place had been around about 40 years and showcased a great many talented entertainers over the years. Here is the owner’s official statement from their website. Share your favorite memories of the place in the comments section!
June 1, 2015
For immediate release:
Official message from Ben Rogers – Retired Owner and Founder.
“Thank you Louisville. It was a great gig!”
The Phoenix Hill Tavern and Jim Porter’s Good Time Emporium closed permanently today.
Please accept my VERY sincere apologies for the abrupt manner in which the clubs closed; and to anyone the closings will effect in a negative manner. (Especially staff members and entertainers.) Because of some agreed to contractual terms, and concerns about safety and liability issues after a closing warning announcement – while trying to control a cash only business – well…“pulling the plug” was just the safest way to do this. PHT is under contract with a first class real estate developer who
I’ve personally researched and selected. The developer is proposing to work closely with The City to deliver a best of class development that will be very positive for the community. Based upon confidentiality agreements, the developer cannot be disclosed at this time, but they plan to introduce themselves and their plans in the near future.
Jim Porters has been bought out by MSD to make way for the MSD “Project WIN.” I want to emphasize that the earlier than expected closing for Porters was my own personal decision and not at MSD’s insistence. I am sure MSD will move forward and do great things for the health and environment of our community. The contents of Jim Porters will be sold very soon in a series of online auctions at wardlowauc.com.
So… this is my heartfelt goodbye… It has been my great honor and privilege to serve literally generations of Louisvillian’s for the past approximately 40 years. I started Phoenix Hill Tavern in 1976, when I was 21 years old, in one tiny room – on the 2nd floor – of a run down warehouse, that my beloved parents Sonny and Mary Ruth Rogers owned on Baxter Ave. “PHT” / “The Hill” eventually expanded into the entire warehouse and became a sprawling 25K sq. ft. “Live Music Showcase.” It operated continuously for 40 years.
I took over the lease at Jim Porters / “Porters” after the building on Lexington Road, also owned by my parents, sat vacant for 2 or 3 years. I completely remodeled and upgraded it, re-opening it as an 18K sq. ft. “Good Time Emporium” in 1990. It operated continuously for 25 years.
In my very biased opinion, I believe these were the 2 most successful nightclubs in the history of our city. It wasn’t because of me; it was because of the people who worked for me. The clubs were certainly two of the most enduring. I do know that they were deeply enjoyed and loved by many – especially me. I always thought of the clubs and staff members as family members. For me personally, this will be bittersweet. I have truly loved being in the bar business. I am so grateful for so many things; the people I’ve met, the tremendous staff members I’ve worked with, the experiences I’ve enjoyed, the life and business lessons I’ve learned, the bands I’ve booked and the friends I’ve made; but most of all I am SO grateful and humbled by the loyalty and support of our community over the years. I wish I could stay forever, however after 40 years in the bar business and having just turned 60 years old – with some increasing health related issues – this was just something whose time had finally come. A natural evolution of things, if you will… “It’s finally just time for me to hang up my spurs and turn the page.” I have no plans to continue on in the bar / restaurant business in any capacity.
Finally, I thank God for allowing me to end this incredible 40 year journey on my own terms.
We intend to settle with our creditors and this will be a successful discontinuance. This will be my only statement. Please, no media interview requests.
