In Wake of ‘Boobquake,’ Iranian Cleric Defends Earthquake-Promiscuity Link
TEHRAN, Iran — A prominent hard-line Iranian cleric who said promiscuity and immodest dress cause earthquakes says God may be holding off on natural disasters in the West in order to let people sin more and consign themselves to hell.
Kazem Sedighi sparked widespread derision with his pronouncements in a prayer sermon last month linking earthquakes with women’s dress.
“Many women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes,” Sedighi said in mid April. In a new sermon Friday, he has defended and elaborated on his claim.

Students Sent Home Over American Flag Shirts
From Yahoo! News: Five Northern California high school students were sent home from their school after coming to school wearing shirts with the American Flag on it during Cinco De Mayo. Kiet Do reports.
http://news.yahoo.com/video/local-15749667/19585803
The best part about the whole incident is that two of the students are of Mexican descent. — Me thinks political correctness has gone too far.

PSALM 2010
Obama is the shepherd I did not want.
He leadeth me beside the still factories.
He restoreth my faith in the Republican party.
He guideth me in the path
of unemployment for his party’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the bread line,
I shall fear no hunger, for his bailouts are with me.
He has anointed my income with taxes,
My expenses runneth over.
Surely, poverty and hard living will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will live in a mortgaged home forever.
I am glad I am American,
I am glad that I am free.
But I wish I was a dog …
And Obama was a tree.

Twelve Keys To Answered Prayer
I know that what I am about to write is not “politically correct.” But let me put it this way: Why should you expect the God of the Bible to answer the prayers of people who pray to some other god? Who pray in a wrong manner? Who regularly disobey the true God? Who ask for the wrong things?
The answer is simple-you should not! Make no mistake. You have no reason to expect real answers to your prayers unless you pray to the true God in the right way. This may seem outrageous to those who take Christianity for granted-just another of the many religions in the world (over 400 denominations). But the truth is that literally millions of people in our Western, supposedly Christian world have no idea who the true God is, or how they should pray to Him.
Oh, I am quite aware that many people repeat some kind of “mambo jumbo” or “mantra” to themselves, and end up “feeling better.” And since problems oftentimes work themselves out, many people feel that they received an answer to their prayers when they really did not. This often goes hand in hand with the practices of “mind science” or the “power of positive thinking.”
But that is not the kind of “answer” I am talking about. What I mean is direct, divine intervention by the personal God, Creator of the heavens and the earth and active Ruler of the entire universe! How can you and your loved ones get this kind of answer to your prayers? Although other points could be offered, I want to set forth a number of basic “keys” to answered prayer. I am positive that if you follow these points literally, sincerely and wholeheartedly, you will begin to receive genuine answers to your prayers. And they may be so real and so forceful that it will surprise many who have never experi-enced this kind of power before.
It is absolutely vital that you pray to the very real God of the Bible if you expect genuine answers to your prayers. He reveals Himself to mankind in much ways-in creation, in the Bible, in His foretelling specific divine intervention in world affairs and in direct answers to those that seek and obey Him.
The Apostle Paul was inspired to describe the true God in this way. “For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God, the Father. Of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live” (1 Corinthians 8:5-6).
In our modern, ecumenical approach to religion, we may think that praying to some vague “blob” off in the sky or to an idol of Buddha is the same as praying to the Creator-the God of Abraham, Isaac, Israel and Jesus Christ. But it is not the same at all!
The true God was revealed by Jesus Christ (Matthew 11:27).
To one of His disciples, He said: “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me” (John 14:9-11).
We read of Jesus Christ acknowledging that God was a loving, divine Person-a “Father.” And we see the Father acting through Christ to heal the sick, to comfort the downcast and to teach those whom He calls to keep the Ten Commandments as a way of life (Matthew 19: 17).
This should certainly help us to better under-stand God’s character and His desire for us.
Christ also set an example for us in praying to the Father:
“Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said:
‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You'” (John 17:1).
Again, when He taught His disci-ples and outlined-the proper approach to prayer-He said: “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom comes. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen” (Matthew 6:9-13).
So once again, Jesus revealed that the God to whom we should pray is a Father. And what does Christ reveal about Him? He is “in heaven.” He has a Kingdom or Government that will be set up on this earth. He-as our Father-is One who can give us daily bread, forgive our sins, deliver us from Satan and bring us into that ever-lasting Kingdom.
In describing this true God, with whom so very few even today are acquainted, the Apostle Paul wrote: “Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing. Him I proclaim to you: ‘God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed any-thing, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings'” (Acts 17:23-26).
We learn more about the true God from the Old Testament. The great Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, was told that he would be driven from his kingdom “until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses” (Daniel 4:32). And this God will not share preeminence with any other. He inspired Isaiah to write: “Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath” (Isaiah 45:22-23).
There are Twelve Keys to Answered Prayer. The true Prayer Warrior has mastered these twelve keys and not even know they have mastered them.
Key #1: Pray Sincerely To The True God – God reveals Himself in many ways – in the Bible, in creation, His hands in world affairs, and his divine intervention in Politics.
Key #2: Study The Bible – It naturally follows that praying to the True God involves believing in what He says. And we find His words instructing human beings on how they should live – in the Holy Bible. We will not receive this full instruction by just “going to church” or by reading bits and pieces of the bible for comfort or inspiration. God commands us to “earnestly study His word to show ourselves approved to Him, a workman unashamed, rightly dividing the Word Of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
Key #3: Deeply Repent of Your Sins – Although from time to time God hears the prayers of anyone who sincerely cries out to him in time of need, He is not bound by his Word to do this. God’s Word answers: “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it can not save; nor his ear heavy, that it can not hear (Isaiah 59:1-2). But your inequities have separated you from God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that he will not hear.
Key#4: Forgive Others – Another vital key is forgiving others. Our loving Father in heaven does not answer or hear those who come to him with hatred, bitterness, or strife in their hearts. The Bible states, “If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men of their trespasses then your Holy Father will not forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15).
Key #5: God Often Hears The Unconverted – It is very important that we do not self-righteously assume that God only hears the prayers of those who are converted and obeying Him. The Creator will often hear the prayers of the weak or spiritually blinded people who humbly pray to him. We all know of vain, disobedient or even worldly professing Christians who brag about answered prayer or tell wild stories of constant miracles in their churches or in their lives. This religious boasting and even falsifying is a real detriment to true Christianity and could be a stumbling block to those being called who see this as sham. I know God answers prayer. I know God performs miraculous wonders. The point I am making here is the boasting, falsifying, or exaggeration of miracles many times leads to the word “I” and leads to one’s own demise and the turning-off one not yet converted.
Key #6: Seek God’s Will – Be absolutely sure, as far as possible, that you align your will and your requests with God’s will. “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).
Key #7: Have Faith In God – The more of the Bible you take in, the more deeply you will realize the importance of “faith”. “Without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). Now, what is “faith”? “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Key #8: Be Persistent – God wants us to be persistent. This shows our genuine interest. He wants us to walk and Talk with Him continually – day after day – and throughout eternity (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
Key #9 Pray Fervently – This is to pray by putting every fiber of our being into it, not just quoting some memorized prayer. As a child this was fine. As an adult, we must place everything we have in our prayers to our Heavenly Father. At one point, Jesus prayed so hard that he sweated blood. Are we any better then to realize when we pray, we are praying to the only true living God, the Creator, the Great I Am, the Alpha and Omega, our heavenly Father?
Key #10 Ask God To Fashion And Mold You – The attitude of seeking God’s will rather then our own, our total submission to God, is vital to our prayer life if we are to receive constant and powerful answers. We must ask God to chasten us and fashion us in his image. You be the clay and let God be the Potter.
Key #11 Give Praise And Thanks To God Almighty – Show sincere love, worship, and adoration like King David. These qualities made him a man after “God’s own heart”. Give Thanks, praise, and glory in all things at all times, in the bad and good times.
Key #12 Pray In The Name Of Jesus Christ – In ancient Israel, the high priest alone was allowed to go into the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle or temple which pictured entering into the direct presence of God. And even he was com-manded to go there only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16). With this sole exception on but one single day, anyone entering this sacred room would be immediately put to death by God Himself! Likewise, mankind, as a whole, has been cut off from direct contact with God.
But today, because Jesus of Nazareth died for our sins, true Christians have direct access to the Father. Instead of fearing death in coming before God, we are rather instructed: “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need”! (Hebrews 4: 16).
Through the “name”, the office and authority of Jesus Christ, we can directly approach God in prayer and worship. We do not need any human priest as a kind of intercessor. For we already have the greatest High Priest-Jesus Christ (v. 14). Jesus taught His true followers: “Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” John 16:23-24).
Of course, many misuse the name of Christ. For, citing Isaiah, Jesus described the religious leaders of His day: “In vain they wor-ship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:9). Again Jesus said: “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46).
To correctly use Jesus’ name, we must obey Him and ask according to His will. Remember that in the Sermon on the Mount, Christ warned: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
God grant that you will learn to pray as Jesus did! You should now understand how to use the most powerful tool in the entire universe. You have been given real answers to unanswered prayer – twelve keys to unanswered prayer! For if God stands before you, who or what can possibly stand against you. True prayer will be answered, Satan will tremble, and demons will flee.

Babylon and Tribulation
The Lisbon Treaty, which went into effect on December 1, 2009, marks a watershed in European history—because it gives Europe the means to function as the superpower empire that in reality it already is.
While political scientists and economists have marveled about Europe’s post-World War II transformation, God’s faithful Church has long foretold these events, and has long warned of the tragic consequences facing America and the British-descended nations. Modern Babylon is rising, and Scripture shows that its rapid rise will herald the tragic demise of America, Britain and British-descended nations during the Great Tribulation.
Thankfully, the exciting truth is that soon after this final Babylonian revival, Christ will return as the conquering King of kings to establish His righteous government on the earth (Revelation 11:15).
Geopolitics: European and American
The Lisbon Treaty made all Europeans citizens of the new European Union. It removes many national veto rights, allows for qualified majority vote instead of unanimous consent of member-nations, creates a strong President of the European Council and establishes the diplomatic post of High Representative, giving the EU more influence on the world stage.
As Europe enters a new era, the U.S. seems adrift. The U.S. jobless rate is at a 26-year high above 10 percent, while U.S. fiscal policy is severely restrained by near-zero interest rates and a rapidly bloating federal debt. By contrast, Germany—Europe’s largest economy—is surging ahead on fundamentals such as strong manufacturing and exports (Wall Street Journal, November 10, 2009). Meanwhile, Europe and Asian nations are making preferential trade deals allowing the EU to take precedence over the U.S. throughout Asia (Financial Times, November 9, 2009). Revelation 18:3 foretells that merchants around the world—including the Asian powers—will, for a while, become wealthy by trading with Europe, and we are beginning to see the fulfillment of these prophecies.
Not only is the U.S. being outpaced and outmaneuvered, it is facing international ridicule! When U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner recently “assured a group of Chinese students in Beijing that their country’s U.S. dollar investments were in good hands,” his comments provoked derisive laughter that “brought the house down” (Financial Times, November 10, 2009)! Such embarrassing lack of confidence in America is one reason why gold rose to record highs in December 2009, and why India’s central bank recently purchased 200 tons of gold in a significant divestiture of U.S. dollars (Wall Street Journal, November 4, 2009).
Those who believe we have “plenty of time” and consider the dollar “too important” to rapidly devalue are overlooking economic fundamentals, neglecting the lessons from the short years it took Weimar Germany and modern-day Zimbabwe to collapse, and disregarding Bible prophecies such as Isaiah 30:13 and 1 Thessalonians 5:3. Regardless of economic swings, these trends will accelerate in the years ahead unless there is national repentance.
Europe: The Final Human Superpower
Will a unified and dominant Europe bring peace, or lead the world to a third World War? As London’s The Times reported, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1989 bluntly warned Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev that a unified Germany “would undermine the stability of the whole international situation and could endanger our security” (September 11, 2009).
Modern pundits may dismiss Thatcher’s concern as “controversial,” but she recognized that a united Germany had—twice in the 20th century—drawn Europe into devastating conflict in its desire for greater power and influence. Would we expect centuries of German psyche to have changed in just the last 50 years?
God’s faithful Church has long warned that Scripture shows a unified Germany leading the final revival of the Holy Roman Empire—an unholy alliance of church and state.
“Revelation 13 and 17 show that, after the fall of the original Roman Empire, there would be ten revivals—seven of which would be ruled over by a Gentile church—the ‘daughter’ of ancient Babylon—a church claiming to be Christian, but actually named by God ‘mystery babylon the Great’—or, more plainly, Babylonian Mysteries!
Six of those have come and gone. The seventh is now forming—the last, final, brief resurrection of the Roman Empire by ten European groups or nations. These are the ten toes of the iron and clay mixed”.
Describing how a great false religious system would interact with the final revival of the “Holy Roman Empire”:
“She ‘sat on’ (Rev. 17:3) all seven of these resurrections of the Roman Empire—called the ‘Holy Roman Empire.’… She is, therefore, to ‘sit on’ this last ‘head of the Beast’—this final resurrection of the Roman Empire. It will be a union of church and state. It is to endure but a very short time. It is to fight against Christ at His second coming! That will be its end” .
As Ezekiel 27 and Revelation 18 reveal, initially all nations will benefit from trading with the Beast, but national sovereignty and religious and political submission will be the price.
Babylon Is Fallen
Before Christ’s return, Babylon the Great will nearly obliterate the U.S. and British-descended nations during the Great Tribulation—a traumatic time for the entire world (Matthew 24:21), for God’s Church, and especially for the physical nations comprising the modern-day descendants of Jacob.
As Babylon rises, God’s Church will suffer persecution, but zealous Christians—who are wholeheartedly dedicated to supporting the Work of preaching the Gospel of the coming Kingdom of God (Mark 16:15; Revelation 3:8), vigorously warning the nations (Ezekiel 33:6), and growing in all of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23)—will be removed to a physical place of safety (Revelation 3:10) before the Great Tribulation. Sadly, those lukewarm Christians who have lost their focus—whether through arrogance or apathy—will not receive God’s protection. They will be “given into his [Satan’s] hand” (Daniel 7:24–25) to become purified by suffering three-and-a-half years of horrific tribulation and martyrdom (Revelation 7:14).
Ezekiel 5:12 shows that two-thirds of modern Jacob will die by pestilence, famine and war. One-third will be taken into captivity throughout the north (Isaiah 10:5–6), the south (Deuteronomy 28:68) and the east (Ezekiel 27:12–13). The captives will endure suffering typical of those enslaved during war. “The sword” will be drawn after them, and barely ten percent will survive (Isaiah 6:9–13)! This is genocide of a magnitude never before seen in human history!
However, God promises that humanity’s final fate is not to end in apocalyptic horror. Jesus Christ, the returning King of kings, will “set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people” (Isaiah 11:11). He will “have mercy on the whole house of Israel,” bringing them back to their own land, leaving “none of them captive any longer” (Ezekiel 39:23–28). The Kingdom of God will cover the entire earth, and all nations will learn to obey God’s commandments—all will keep the seventh-day Sabbath and annual Holy Days (Isaiah 66:23; Zechariah 14:16–18).
You can be a pioneer in this coming reality! You can escape these terrors and can stand before Christ, at His return, as a faithful servant who will receive the first and better resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:52; Hebrews 11:35). You can—if you act on the Truth!

Will “Political Correctness” Destroy Us?
Though most people do not grasp this fact, the increasing influence of “political correctness” will eventually help destroy the United States, Great Britain and Canada! I have never seen the basic values and way of life of our ancestors in all of our English-speaking nations being undermined so severely. For “political correctness” is like a cancer. It spreads slowly and almost undetectably through the body until death is assured. Millions of people have lost loved ones or friends because of cancer. Yet countless millions more in our lands will be destroyed because of the “cancer” of political correctness.
How dare I write that?
Because political correctness undermines virtually every basic value upon which our Western nations were based in decades past. And because any true Christian who tries to challenge it will be viciously persecuted. Although they rarely if ever will admit it, the advocates of “political correctness” are displaying an underlying resentment and often even hatred against the idea of a true God—a God who can tell them what to do, and how they ought to be living their lives. As Jesus Christ said, “this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19). Indeed, the “light” Jesus Christ proclaimed involved a consistent way of life based upon sincere obedience to the laws and principles contained in the Ten Commandments. And Jesus also said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God’” (Luke 4:4).
Yet, when God’s clear instructions in the Bible are repeated in public or espoused by some of our institutions, ultra-liberal “politically correct” individuals become visibly angry. They act as if people are going against what is sound and rational if they talk about God being the Creator, or say that the Bible ought to be the basis of all right conduct. How far have we fallen!
As many of you know, the early leaders of both America and Britain had tremendous respect for the teachings of the Bible. President George Washington stated, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” Noted statesman Daniel Webster observed, “If there is anything in my thoughts or style to commend, the credit is due to my parents for instilling in me an early love of the Scriptures. If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.”
William Gladstone—respected as one of Britain’s greatest leaders—said, “I have known 95 of the world’s great men in my time, and of these 87 were followers of the Bible. The Bible is stamped with a Specialty of Origin, and an immeasurable distance separates it from all competitors.” And the famous British scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, stated, “There are more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane history.”
But when Christian ministers today explain that fornication, adultery, drunkenness, homosexual practices and abortion are absolutely wrong, the secularists—including, sadly, many top journalists—take great offense. In fact, they often try to persecute those who hold such views—and certainly those true ministers who follow God’s command to teach those views! After Jesus Himself described the time of war, upheaval and terrible earthquakes, famines, pestilences and “fearful sights” marking the end of the age, He stated, “But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake” (Luke 21:12).
Why?
Because Jesus Christ said that “men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19). These “secular” individuals—increasingly in charge of our entire society—feel a sense of terrible guilt when confronted with the truths of the Bible. To relieve this guilt, they turn against others who teach a way of life that has always brought peace and stability throughout any society to the degree that it has been sincerely practiced.
These events will especially affect the American and British-descended peoples, who are, in fact, the physical descendants of the so-called “Lost Ten Tribes of Israel.”
One example of the Bible’s end-time references to us today, as well as to the ancient House of Israel, is found in the book of Hosea. The prophet was inspired to write: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. The more they increased, the more they sinned against Me; I will change their glory into shame” (Hosea 4:6–7). Because our nations’ political, educational and religious leaders have persistently rejected the laws and teachings of the Bible, we are headed for tribulation beyond anything the world has ever seen! Yet this will be loving correction from the Creator, who hates to see us go down the wrong road and become enmeshed in vile practices that destroy the essence of human decency—as He views it.
Those who truly believe the inspired words of the Bible will indeed be increasingly persecuted and harassed in the next few years. Yet “politically correct” leaders will continually praise wicked men and women and wicked practices of all sorts. They will gladly forget the words of God, “Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but such as keep the law contend with them. Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand all” (Proverbs 28:4–5). Such people certainly do not like to hear what the author of Proverbs states soon after that: “One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination” (v. 9).
People who continually “forsake” the laws of God as revealed in the Bible will not have their prayers heard by the true God of creation! They will not be blessed in the end. Although they will increase in power and influence for a few years, God’s word shows that—in the end—they will not prevail.
In a dual prophecy clearly intended for our day as well as ancient Israel, the Eternal God told our forefathers, “But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. I will set My face against you, and you shall be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you shall reign over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you” (Leviticus 26:14–17).
Within the next several years, we will begin to see American and British Commonwealth forces being defeated and humiliated more than at any other time in history! Rebellion against God will be the cause. As these events unfold, may the Eternal God help you to understand.
As ultra-liberals and “politically correct” individuals increasingly take over our society and almost totally dominate the media—where so many people get their ideas—be sure that you and your family are aware of what is actually going on around you. Be aware that you are, in fact, near the end of this present age just before Christ’s return. Be aware that although it does grow “darkest just before the dawn,” Jesus Christ will soon come in great power to deliver His people and bring them into His everlasting Kingdom. After describing some of the terrible events just ahead, Jesus said, “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near” (Luke 21:28).
So, there is great hope for the future! As God inspired the Psalmist to describe the Messiah’s coming reign over the entire earth: “In His days the righteous shall flourish, and abundance of peace, until the moon is no more” (Psalm 72:7).
Note: There are several movies I would recommend if you have not yet watched them. They are located at your local library in most cases. One is “The Passion Of Christ” with Mel Gibson and the “Left Behind Series.”
God Bless you

John – Chapter 19
Christ condemned and crucified. (1-18) Christ on the cross. (19-30) His side pierced. (31-37) The burial of Jesus. (38-42)
Verses 1-18 Little did Pilate think with what holy regard these sufferings of Christ would, in after-ages, be thought upon and spoken of by the best and greatest of men. Our Lord Jesus came forth, willing to be exposed to their scorn. It is good for every one with faith, to behold Christ Jesus in his sufferings. Behold him, and love him; be still looking unto Jesus. Did their hatred sharpen their endeavors against him? And shall not our love for him quicken our endeavors for him and his kingdom? Pilate seems to have thought that Jesus might be some person above the common order. Even natural conscience makes men afraid of being found fighting against God. As our Lord suffered for the sins both of Jews and Gentiles, it was a special part of the counsel of Divine Wisdom, that the Jews should first purpose his death and the Gentiles carry that purpose into effect. Had not Christ been thus rejected of men, we had been forever rejected of God. Now was the Son of man delivered into the hands of wicked and unreasonable men. He was led forth for us, that we might escape. He was nailed to the cross, as a Sacrifice bound to the altar. The Scripture was fulfilled; he did not die at the altar among the sacrifices, but among criminals sacrificed to public justice. And now let us pause, and with faith look upon Jesus. Was ever sorrow like unto his sorrow? See him bleeding, see him dying, see him and love him! Love him, and live to him!
Verses 19-30 Here are some remarkable circumstances of Jesus’ death, more fully related than before. Pilate would not gratify the chief priests by allowing the writing to be altered; which was doubtless owing to a secret power of God upon his heart, that this statement of our Lord’s character and authority might continue. Many things done by the Roman soldiers were fulfillments of the prophecies of the Old Testament. All things therein written shall be fulfilled. Christ tenderly provided for his mother at his death. Sometimes, when God removes one comfort from us, he raises up another for us, where we looked not for it. Christ’s example teaches all men to honor their parents in life and death and to provide for their wants, and to promote their comfort by every means in their power. Especially observe the dying word wherewith Jesus breathed out his soul. It is finished; that is, the counsels of the Father concerning his sufferings were now fulfilled. It is finished; all the types and prophecies of the Old Testament, which pointed at the sufferings of the Messiah, were accomplished. It is finished; the ceremonial law is abolished; the substance is now come, and all the shadows are done away. It is finished; an end is made of transgression by bringing in an everlasting righteousness. His sufferings were now finished both those of his soul, and those of his body. It is finished; the work of man’s redemption and salvation is now completed. His life was not taken from him by force, but freely given up.
Verses 31-37 A trial was made whether Jesus was dead. He died in less time than persons crucified commonly did. It showed that he had laid down his life of himself. The spear broke up the very fountains of life; no human body could survive such a wound. But its being so solemnly attested, shows there was something peculiar in it. The blood and water that flowed out, signified those two great benefits which all believers partake of through Christ, justification and sanctification; blood for atonement, water for purification. They both flow from the pierced side of our Redeemer. To Christ crucified we owe merit for our justification, and Spirit and grace for our sanctification. Let this silence the fears of weak Christians, and encourage their hopes; there came both water and blood out of Jesus’ pierced side, both to justify and sanctify them. The Scripture was fulfilled, in Pilate’s not allowing his legs to be broken (Ps 34:20). There was a type of this in the paschal lamb (Ex 12:46). May we ever look to Him, whom, by our sins, we have ignorantly and heedlessly pierced, nay, sometimes against convictions and mercies; and who shed from his wounded side both water and blood, that we might be justified and sanctified in his name.
Verses 38-42 Joseph of Arimathea was a disciple of Christ in secret. Disciples should openly own themselves; yet some, who in lesser trials have been fearful, in greater have been courageous. When God has work to do, he can find out such as are proper to do it. Nicodemus, a secret friend to Christ, did not his constant follower the embalming though not his constant follower. That grace, which at first is like a bruised reed, may afterward resemble a strong cedar. Hereby these two rich men showed the value they had for Christ’s person and doctrine, and that it was not lessened by the reproach of the cross. We must do our duty as the present day and opportunity are, and leave it to God to fulfil his promises in his own way and his own time. The grave of Jesus was appointed with the wicked, as was the case of those who suffered as criminals; but he was with the rich in his death, as prophesied, (Isaiah 53:9); these two circumstances it was very unlikely should ever be united in the same person. He was buried in a new sepulchre; therefore it could not be said that it was not he, but some other that rose. We also are here taught not to be particular as to the place of our burial. He was buried in the sepulchre next at hand. Here is the Sun of Righteousness set for a while, to rise again in greater glory, and then to set no more.
