John Mellencamp’s life in 15 songs

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

john_cougar_1282144301I really like this. Anytime an Artist will take time out of their life and give us “common” people a little insight on the songs and the way they came about I find highly interesting and soak it up like a sponge!

It reminds me of a campfire setting and everyone listening to the older wiser man telling the stories for some reason. Anyway, I didn’t write the article for the Rolling Stone so I can’t copy it all here but I encourage you to follow the link and read it. You really can’t beat a guy like John. He is open and honest and gives us small glimpses on how “brass” the record industry can be. He didn’t cover my favorite one though “I ain’t even done with the night”..:(

Here are a few  quotes from the article to wet your whistle though 🙂 Chuck

On “Jack & Diane”

It was 1980, and I was down in Miami again, making a record. We had spent $3oo,ooo, and I had three songs done. The record company was not happy. Finally the president of the company came down and was like, “You’re spending money like crazy!” He went nuts. The three songs were “Jack & Diane,” “Hurts So Good” and “Hand to Hold On To.” He hated them. Hated them! He said, “We expect you to become the next Neil Diamond.
What is this shit?”

JM

On “I Need a Lover”

By the time of “I Need a Lover,” I had three albums out. They sold nothing. We were recording in Miami at the same time that the Eagles were finishing up Hotel California. I would walk by and hear “Life in the Fast Lane,” go back into my session and hear, ‘I need a lover that won’t…” I’d be like, ‘Oh, fuck. I don’t know what I’m doing here.”

JM

And “Peaceful World” (This quote speaks volumes of John’s integrity and what he believes in. I underlined his convictions and applaud him for it! :Editor KA)

I signed to Columbia at this point against my better judgment. On “Peaceful World,” I brought in India.Arie to sing on it. I won’t mention any names, but when this song was delivered to Columbia, one of the executives said, “Why does Mellencamp always have a fuckin’ nigger singing with him?” My manager came back and told me that, and I was like, “Get me of this fucking label. I don’t give a shit. Get me off Columbia right now.”

JM

THIS LITTLE COMIC BOOK SHOP GROWS UP TO BE ON TV!

Jason Mewes, Jason Lee and me in 1997
at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash,
back when we first took over the former

Comicology on Monmouth Street.
The window was painted by SModcaster
Scott Mosier.

After two years on Monmouth Street,
we wanted more space to hang some
View Askew movie props and costumes,
so we moved up to the Broad Street location
you see on the AMC show COMIC BOOK MEN.

But the Secret Stash exists at all for two reasons:
a) I got an offer I couldn’t refuse, and
b) I wanted to give Walter Flanagan his dream job.

From 1988 to 1994, Walt and I bought new comics together every week, hitting any store or conventions in our area. And no matter where we shopped (Comics Plus, Ray’s or Fantasy Zone), the conversation on the drive home was about wishing for a life in comic books: writing, drawing, or even…

“Wouldn’t it be awesome to OWN a comics store?” I’d ask.

Ever the pragmatist, Walter responded “Nah. But WORKING in a comic book store’s my dream job.”

“s’the difference?” I finally asked one day.

“You’d get your books the minute they open the boxes for the store cost and you’d talk comics all day long but you’d have none of the headaches.”

In 1996, the owner of Comicology announced he was moving and intended to sell the store. He asked me if I wanted to buy it and take over. I figured I’d open a comic book store one day when film was done with me, but this was a turn-key opportunity to buy into an already-established and operation business was so good, I moved up my timeline. We struck a deal for $30k – roughly $2500.00 more than CLERKS cost to make – for which I received all the store contents, the pull list customers and a fixed rent. Bry and Walt repainted inside, Scott did the front window, and we opened for business as Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash
in December of ’96.

When Walter finally quit his job at the Highlands Recreation Center to run the Secret Stash full time, I made him the highest paid comic book store manager in New Jersey. He’s been running the place for nearly 16 years now, quietly thriving in boom and bust economies. And ultimately, all his hard word to keep the business profitable aggregated into a television show about the Stash – a television show in which Walter is the star. And you’d think that’d change a guy…

But not Walt Flanagan.

Last year, I told him “One day I’m gonna sell you the Secret Stash for a dollar, sir. It’ll be like your retirement package.”

“No thanks,” Walt said. “I don’t wanna own a comic book store. I just wanna run it.”

Well, your dream came true, Walt: you do, indeed, run the Secret Stash.

But as far as I’M concerned?

You own it, too.

Shit, sir – you PWN it.

Ugly Kid Joe is seeking your help for a video shoot

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Reunited hard rockers UGLY KID JOE have launched a Kickstarter campaign to offer their fans the opportunity to get involved with the production of their music video for the song “I’m Alright” off their latest EP, “Stairway To Hell”.

Commented the band: “It has been a minute since our last music video, and we want to take it to the next level with this one. We’re going the independent route and only with your help and generosity can we make this thing happen.

“We have lots of cool merchandise, some very rare and limited, and even a special experience on the set to offer you.

“Your donations will go directly to the making of this video, from renting the gear to hiring a kick-ass crew and sending it through post-production to be completed.

“We can only do this with your help, so if you like what you see, go ahead and throw down what you can. We’re very excited to make this video… Let’s do this!”

Among the items offered through Kickstarter is to get a chance to meet UGLY KID JOE on tour in October. Other items include an opportunity to attend an UGLY KID JOE rehearsal with a friend in the U.S. and go out for dinner with the band afterwards.

This project will only be funded if at least $12,000 is pledged by Friday, October 12.

For more information, visit Kickstarter.
