My review of Kathleen (Holly Marshall) Coleman’s book “The Lost Girl”
Some background info for the “younger” generation.
First off, when I was growing up, which really wasn’t that long ago, TV was a lot different than it is now. We didn’t have an unlimited amount of channels to choose from. Most homes as I like to say, had the “basic four and no more”. Netflex wasn’t around. Hulu wasn’t around. YouTube wasn’t around. In fact, the “basic four and no more” channels often signed off at midnight with the National Anthem. You would be watching TV if you were able to stay up that late and then you would hear “This concludes our Broadcast day” and with that, the TV went silent until morning. Very few channels stayed on the air 24 hours a day back then. Sound strange? Here is what most of us saw at midnight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=po_hBMtTaDg#t=37
With knowing now the back ground knowledge that we all had the same channels, we all watched pretty much the same shows. There were 3 major networks. ABC, NBC, and CBS. Channel 9 was a public funded educational channel. You could catch Sesame Street, the Electric Company” and “Mister Roger’s Neighborhood” on there. DVR’s didn’t exist. Nor were there any VHS recorders. The school systems used BetaMax machines and the average household didn’t have one of those. They were too expensive.
So most of our young lives were glued to the Saturday morning cartoons. We all watched these until 11am or 12pm and then headed outside to play. Play outside you ask? Yes. We got up from the television and journeyed out into the afternoon sun. In our neighborhood, we usually rode bikes or played basketball. Real bikes and real basketball. Nothing “virtual” back then. Real sweat and real fun.
When I was in grade school one of the most popular Saturday morning TV shows was “Land of the Lost”. A story about a dad and his two kids that went on a “routine expedition” and after going over a waterfall, woke up to a dinosaur roaring at them in a strange world with mystical pylons that controlled the weather and time travel. A lost city of ruins that held within its dark tunnels primitive creatures called “Sleestak”. They slumbered in the dark until awakened. My cousin’s little brother was scared of them so I made it a point not to spend the night at his house on Fridays. He wasn’t allowed to watch it and I didn’t want to miss the “Land of the Lost”.
It’s funny. Childhood shows and movies, like other memories get embedded in our beings and stay there forever. You never really forget them. To this day, I can remember most of the episodes. From finding “Dopey” the baby Brontosaurus to Enik learning that the Sleestaks’ aren’t his past ancestors but his future ones. The Marshalls’ also befriended a little Paku guy named “Chaka”. The generation I came up in were all raised on TV. We went to school and talked about what we had seen over the weekend. The playground talk went something like this. “Did you see “Land of the Lost” this weekend? Yea, the dinosaurs where “Groovy! “ And “Holly?’ “Dyn-o-MITE!”
Holly Marshall was probably most young guys and some girls’ first crush. At the time I was 8 years old when it came out. Not really noticing girls yet but did notice the little pigtailed tomboyish girl on the Land of the Lost. A few years later I would have those same innocent silly crushing on a girl on the New Mickey Mouse Club! It’s funny now and somewhat embarrassing to admit that but as a little kid I wanted to rescue the Marshalls from the Land of the Lost. I lived a pretty sheltered life and TV was my escape until I found music. That “escape” still continues to this day.
Land of the Lost ran for 3 years and then it was over. The last season “Uncle Jack” came thru the portal and Rick Marshall went home. In my innocent little mind I felt like Rick spent the rest of his life trying to get back to rescue the rest of his family. In reality, it was monetary disputes I think that sent “Rick” home.
Growing up and growing older as we all do hopefully, I like most people, often wondered what happened to Kathy Coleman. The little girl that played Holly. Occasionally I would catch an episode on TV and would watch it. As a kid I didn’t see the props and somewhat cheesy sets but for 1974 it was state of the art. The show creators took great care in producing it. Topnotch writers including some very famous sci fi writers. Great care was taken in each episode including the use of “green screens” and stop motion animation for the dinosaurs. But what happened to Holly?
She grew up. She got married. She got divorced. She had kids. She got…
And then the internet was born. A wonderful tool that instantly helped people reconnect with their childhood friends and memories. A website was started way back in 1997 called “Land of the Lost.com.” I was probably one of the first on the message board and emailing the owner George of the site. We all had something in common. We grew up in a good time. We all crushed on Holly. The website eventually had some issues from overzealous fans I guess and it sort of went by the way side. But we all asked over and over “Where is Kathy?
Fast forward to 2015. Kathy or Kathleen Coleman as she prefers to be called released her book “The Lost Girl”. It’s an autobiographical account of what happened to “Holly”. It fills in all the gaps before her role as Holly and gets us all up to date on her today.
I recently got my autographed copy!. She will gladly sign it for you when you order one from here. >Amazon<. If fact, she mailed mine out the same day I ordered it and I got it two days later! How’s that for service! I read it all in one sitting. Not because it’s short. It’s not. Its 194 pages and full of never before seen photographs too! But it’s that interesting. I mean here is “Holly” In her own words! The little kid in me couldn’t wait to read it! In saying that, I played music all my life and know some of the really bad pitfalls that can accompany being in the music business too but this book was a real eye opener. She didn’t live the charmed life. It was anything but that. We have all seen enough real Hollywood TV tragedies to find out that what we see on TV is not real after all. Some childhood actors never make it to adulthood. Kathleen lived it. More importantly, lived through it. Her being born in the early 60’s I would have suspected a somewhat bohemian lifestyle. It was more than that even if unintentional. The title of her book is “The Lost Girl”. It’s a slight hat tip to the 70’s show she was on but I think in reality it is more about her real life. The one we didn’t see. The one she lived after the show stopped production. She, like her TV family got into a raft and took the ride of her life and got “lost”. But waking up to fake dinosaurs’ had nothing on her real life screen. Her monsters were real. She couldn’t yell “cut” and the scene stop. I won’t give away any of her story. You should order her book 🙂 but I want to say this enclosing, Land of the Lost is a great childhood memory. Watching it with a bowl of cereal and being mesmerized by the story lines and dinosaurs was surreal to me at the time. I grew up loving the show and the characters and continue to do so to this day. But I now realize that “Holly Marshall” wasn’t “real” in a sense. She was played by and brought to life by a great actress named Kathleen Coleman. The little kid inside me still wants to rescue the Marshalls’ but in real life, what really matters is that Kathleen rescued herself from the waterfall of this strange world and is doing well attending Comic and Sci Fi Cons and admired by fans all over the world. She in reality, found her way out of the “Land of the Lost”.

Ghost “Unplugged! Awesome show and a Kazoo too!
The Swedish band “Ghost” seems to have came around at the right time. Back in the 80’s if a band had a “evil” or satanic” feel to it the whole world would have had major issues with these guys. It’s anti catholic or maybe it’s an inverted take on the church but it would have definitely got them in hot water. Judging from the interviews I have read and seen, it’s a gimmick and one that has set them apart from all the other bands these days. The music is borrowed heavily from Blue Oyster Cult, King Diamond and bands of that style. Ghost has even managed to keep almost all of their identities a secret from the general public. A stunt that KISS pulled off back in the seventies. Papa is on vocals and all the other musicians are called “Nameless Ghouls”. Everyone wears a mask to protect their identity. Rumor has it that Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters has donned a mask and sat in with them from time to time too!
Ghost is currently doing unplugged shows and here is the one they just did in Seattle! Check it out. Ghost announce Unholy Unplugged tour – TeamRock

Gene Simmons gets called out by his son!
(If you like this “Like it and share it :P)
Not sure how tough it would be to grow up being the son of a famous and very wealthy Dad. It had to have more perks than downfalls. I can only imagine that every once in a while you would grow tired of spending money or riding in Limo’s all your life. But, in the natural world with out all the glitter and glamour, Nick had a Dad, “Gene”. Gene had a son. It’s the “changing of the guard” story. The Student becomes the Master. Here is Nick’s story! NickelBack cancels North American tour!
MEDICAL EMERGENCY FORCES NICKELBACK TO CANCEL NORTH AMERICAN DATES FOR 2015 NO FIXED ADDRESS TOUR, CHAD KROEGER TO UNDERGO VOCAL CORD SURGERY Refunds Available to Ticketholders at Point of Purchase [cid:image003.jpg@01D0AD9C.7BAD1AF0]LOS ANGELES (June 23, 2015) - Multi-platinum selling rock band NICKELBACK is forced to cancel all remaining dates of the second leg of the 2015 No Fixed Address North American tour due to lead vocalist Chad Kroeger being diagnosed with an operable cyst on his voice box. Kroeger will undergo surgery in 3 weeks following vocal rest ordered by doctors. Ticket refunds will be available at the point of purchase. For more information please visit http://www.livenation.com/ and http://www.nickelback.com/. Nickelback cancelled shows over the weekend, hoping the additional rest and treatment would help but an unfortunate diagnosis from Kroeger's doctor revealed a more serious scenario. ""I am sorry I have to interrupt the party this summer and I am definitely not thrilled with the prospect of being silent for many weeks to come when I could be out there playing for our fans" shared Chad Kroeger. "I am relying on my doctor and his team to help get my voice back in good form as quickly as possible." Kroeger's medical team anticipates a full recovery and the No Fixed Address tour will resume with their previously scheduled European run, in Helsinki, Finland on September 30th. KickActs interviews “For The Life Of Me”
Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting artists on the scene.
Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.
What’s up, this is Austin, I play guitar in the rock n’ roll band, For The Life Of Me from Portland, Oregon. We can be found at facebook.com/forthelifeofmepdx and forthelifeofme.bandcamp.com and at reverbnation.com/forthelifeofmepdx. Our EP ‘Closure’ is up on itunes and amazon mp3.
Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?
Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. He is a lyrical and creative genius. He has a huge catalog of work and still continues to find new words and new music for his expression that never gets old. Sigur Ros… ultimately, probably my favorite band. When ( ) came out in 2002 it blew me away, opened my eyes to all new kinds of music, and became a huge influence. I didn’t think I would ever hear any other music like it and so far I’ve been right.
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?
You can’t avoid pitfalls. They’re always going to be there, probably 2-1, you just have to keep at it. Keep practicing, keep bouncing back, and keep doing what you do. Don’t change your style to fit in or try to emulate anyone else.
Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?
In a previous band we had our “farewell show” and sold out the smaller, mid-size venue of around 500 people or so with the help of some of our friends’ bands. That was one of the best feelings I ever had. Knowing that many people wanted to come out for just a local show.
On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.
I’m not sure I could name one specific worst show. More like worst shows…plural. I remember a few when I was much younger. One where I completely forgot a lengthy part on the guitar so just played random stuff until the next part. It was a mess. Another time when I didn’t realize until after the song was over that I played the whole thing in the wrong tuning. When you’re on stage sometimes it’s really hard to hear everyone at the same time, so I can only imagine what it sounded like to the crowd. So stupid.
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?
Actually, the 8th grader in me still likes to send random emails with (.)(.) to my coworkers. I really love movies and have way too many dvds. I also like stealing coasters from restaurants and bars. The most prized one so far is from the ice bar in Las Vegas. I think they charge like $6 for one in the gift shop. So it doesn’t even come from the actual bar. Screw that.
What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?
Sucks. Less and less people are playing real instruments or singing with their real voices. Electronic drum tracks, programmed guitar, auto-tune… Lots of people will defend it, saying something like “well that’s what they’re into and at least they’re being creative.” I think it’s pathetic and embarrassing to be honest. Maybe (hopefully) that’s just around here. (editor note: I couldn’t agree more!)
Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…
Jeff loves monster trucks and big game hunting, Chris is a big time graphic designer for Beyonce and the like, I love cold weather like most people love warm weather and enjoy going to see movies by myself, Lee loves running in marathons and sometimes jogs in place during practice.
Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?
Well definitely not Ginger. That’s pretty much self-explanatory. I’m not the grandma type so not Mrs. Howell. Obviously it’s Mary Ann if the professor is totally out.
Our last one is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!
I just want to go on record and say that general academia and the accepted timeline of world history is appalling. Especially in America where we’re supposed to believe that North and Central America were only “discovered” around 500 years ago. That’s ridiculous. Just in general, human civilization goes back much, much further than described in text books. One of a million examples is how the great pyramids and the sphinx are said to have been built by the Egyptians around 2500 BC. Sorry to them, but no. There is heavy rainwater erosion all over the sphinx. When has it ever rained regularly in Egypt? Before a major pole shift and climate change that happened a little over 12,000 years ago, which dates the sphinx to roughly 10,500 BC. Look it up. Chew on that a bit.(editor note: good stuff!)

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?
Janis Joplin was my first love, her raw emotion spoke to me in a way that has since been unmatched. I am a big fan of Ray Charles, Nikka Costa, Shelby Lynn.. Well just about anything that moves me.
I will say watching Prince perform his Purple Rain tour changed how I viewed the stage and the great intimacy you can produce and exchange with an audience
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?
Yes !! Don’t change who you are as an artist or person for anyone, any producer, label , manager. There are a million extremely talented people out there, just look at all the reality shows like the voice, x factor etc… The thing that will set you apart if you have real talent is your authenticity. PERIOD.
Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?
I really have had so many amazing shows , but the one that will forever be burned in my memory is opening for Three Dog Night, with my ex band Hangman’s Daughter. There was probably about 8-10K people in the audience… we were asked back for an oncore and received really long standing ovation!!! I sold out all of my merchandise that night, it was amazing.
On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.
Yep… after 3 months in a smallish van touring the west coast.. My vocals were starting to give out. I had the flu and we were to perform somewhere up in Washington? Well we ended up in an icestorm and nearly died trying to get to our show.. We made it and a total of about 6 really drunk old people were there to celebrate our amazing survival story with us!
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?
I love drawing pictures of boobs.. who told you!!! Oh and I am an energy healer.. that is actually a pretty cool Hobby..
What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?
Well I’m coming back after taking a small break to have my daughter and focus on being a mom. My initial take on this whole scene is that it is much improved!! I was just joking with a writer the other day about hanging flyers up on telephone poles.. now it is all about social media, this gives us as artists and entertainers great strength to connect to our fans on a very personal consistent basis and when we are connected we are supported.
Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…
Well , My keyboard player is a highschool band teacher, lesbian and married to a minister.. and oh we live in the bible belt! My bass player just had a song played at the world series that he wrote with ZZ top called “This Beard is here to Party”, That is probably enough????? ha.. the rest is confidential
Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?
Absolutely Ginger. This is a hookup right?
Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!
Be yourself!! Don’t let anyone change your mind, your body, your idea if you don’t want them too.
Know that this life is fucking short and this is not a dress rehearsal.Love who you want , don’t waste one more minute.Get on with it and if you are bitchen and complaining.. do something different.. Everything in your experience is a product of your own thoughts.. And don’t forget to sing.

KickActs interviews Nikol!
Recently James Lowe from Kickacts Magazine sat down with one of the very exciting
artists on the scene. The following is a written interview we conducted with the
artist while they were working on their next CD and Tour!
Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you
can be found at on the web.
I have been on the stage since forever. When I was old enough to walk, I would follow my older sister up onto stage while she performed a solo in church and when I felt like it I would sing a note, when I didn’t, I’d just stand there with my thumb in my mouth…I just wanted to be ON the stage. I’ve attended Berklee College of Music for Stage Performance and been to AMTC three times. When I was in school I was in every singing group they had (girls ensemble, chorale, chorus) and I played violin for 4 years (when my parents moved us from MA to NC the
school we attended didn’t have an orchestra, so I stopped playing). I bought my first guitar (a black thin-body Martin acoustic/electric) right after I turned 18 and started taking private lessons at Raleigh Music Academy. Since then, I have
opened up for a few fashion shows and have been playing shows at live music venues in Virginia and various cities in North Carolina. My first album just released on

Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?
Paramore – Hayley WIlliams has an amazing voice and their lyrics are incredible.\
Lacey Sturm – she was the lead singer for Flyleaf (she has since stepped down). i
wish i knew how to scream and sing like that, you know, and still have it sound
good..Christina Aguilera – her voice is unreal. that power, the unending range, and just
overall amazing talent, whoa!!!
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any
pitfalls they should avoid?
stay positive – pitfalls to avoid: all negativity. the more work you put in,
the better your results.
Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?
i played a show in Chapel Hill, NC that was flawless performance-wise. the
energy was really there that night and the crowd was a lot of fun. also, i got
scheduled for a show at a big venue in Raleigh through a booking agency a couple
years back, and was given the wrong time for my set – they changed it when i got to
the venue, so i went from being 3rd or 4th on the lineup to 1st. i went on and only
had a handful of people there to watch because nobody planned on getting there until
much later. when the set time i was originally given came around, i did a little
show for people in the parking lot. that’s one of my favorite nights. the fans
really loved it and i felt good about turning the night around into something
positive.
On the same token as the above question. How about a worse gig story.
i actually just played an acoustic show and completely blew the beginning – i
forgot the words to the verse i was singing, so i moved on to a different one that
made people laugh just by the title – it was a cover by The Downtown Fiction called
“I Just Wanna Run” because that’s what I really wanted to do at that time, haha –
the rest of the show was successful from then on – sometimes all it takes is a
little loosening up
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect
hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?
every time i go to a show, i get a tshirt. so i have a collection of band
tshirts. my aunt makes beautiful quilts and she helped me cut and design a concert
tee blanket and i love it. it might be time for tshirt blanket part 2
What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?
i just kind of hate that schools are cutting music education.
Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that.
Chris, drums, teaches at the Living Arts School in NC and is a black belt in
Tae Kwon Do. Damien started playing guitar when he was 14 years old and has spent a
lot of time doing volunteer environmental work. Justin has played guitar for over 15
years and likes to kayak. Anthony started playing bass when he 14 and is an avid
mountain biker.
9. Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you getto hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell, and why?
i would love a vacation on the island!!
