Ten Questions with “Tan”!
Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and where you can be found at on the web.
Thanks for having me! My name is TAN, and I’m a Los Angeles based vocalist and songwriter, originally from Malaysia. I just released my debut single “Heat Wave“ which I collaborated with producer Mario Marchetti (Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lopez ) and Grammy winning engineer Evren Göknar (The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mariah Carey) and it’s now on iTunes and Amazon. You can find me on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/tanofficialmusic, Twitter – https://twitter.com/tanrealmusic and I also love posting random stuff on my Instagram – http://instagram.com/tanofficial
Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?
I’ve always been a huge fan of pop and rock music. Simple Plan was my favorite band during my high school years; they inspired me to pick up my guitar and write a song whenever I needed to express myself.
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?
Learn about music business because I think it is just as important as music theory. Always stay humble no matter what.
Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?
Well I had my debut TV appearance when I was 10 on Astro Kids Talent Quest, (Season 1) which is Malaysia’s version of Star Search. I’ll never forget the attention I got from my friends and teachers at school at that time haha
On the same token as the above question. How about a “worst gig” ever story.
One time there were a lot of drunk people and some of them were showing me how to sing while I was performing. So… I never went back to that venue again lol
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?
I really like to collect guitar picks because I know for a fact that they wouldn’t cost me a fortune haha
What do you think about the present music scene or lack of?
I don’t think that the present music scene is lacking anything. Music is art and there’s really no right and wrong.
Tell us something about you that we wouldn’t expect to hear… (Like their hobbies or something like that)
Mmm I don’t know…Well I guess I should tell you guys about my guilty pleasure, which is eating before going to bed every night haha
Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls. Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?
Well I don’t really want to imagine myself stranded on an island but the answer is Mary Ann. lol
Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”
Thanks guys for having me! Be sure to download “Heat Wave” on iTunes and be on the look out for the music video coming soon.
Keep rocking!

Kick Acts interviews 3PM
Kickacts thanks James for the interview!
Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web. We are 3PM, a punk rock band out of Baltimore, Maryland. Our music shows our passion for the art with the meaningful lyrics, the catchy tunes, and the energy that can get anybody involved. We can be found at www.facebook.com/3PMsounds, on spotify and pandora.
Who are your musical heroes, influences & why? Our main influence is Blink-182, but we also draw inspiration from other punk rock bands such as Green Day, New Found Glory, and Yellowcard. We envy their ability to have endless amounts of fun on stage and on tours even while playing the same songs over and over again.
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid? One thing you have to do, is never stop trying, but also stay grounded. We promise that you will be accepted for many opportunities, while turned down for many more. This happens to every starting band, so never give up and keep on going. However, if you get a couple shows and rack up some fans don’t think that you’re the biggest band in the world. Don’t let that get over your head and get a big ego.
Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share? We played our record release show for our album “Change of Plans” at the Recher Theater. It was an amazing show with five great bands on the lineup and over five hundred fans in attendance. After our last song, we heard cheering and all of a sudden the word “encore” came from a few fans and that spread rapidly. Our drummer sat back down, we put on our guitars, and then the sound guy shut everything off…The mics were off and there was nothing he could do. It was the best show we ever played with an ending that wasn’t quite as amazing.
On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story. One time we played a show at a show in which we were expected to sell twenty tickets. We were put on the show at the very last second and didn’t have time to sell tickets. We ended up bringing a whole FOUR people to the show, and almost had to take our stuff and drive home. The lady running the show probably will never ask us to play again. :/
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs? We can often be found in the gym, we like playing Pokemon, and eating dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings.
What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that? The music that is mainstream is just…not what we would prefer. Not to bash other genres, but we don’t enjoy listening to the same auto-tuned, computerized, rapped songs.
Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that… Our guitarist played the clarinet in middle school, our singer is obsessed with snap chat, and our drummer is the biggest nerd ever when it comes to video games.
Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why? Ginger, because red hair is attractive
Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”! Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming out for the PS4 =D

2. Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

3. Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?
A: Do it for yourself, for the love of music, not for the money, it’s not about the money or the fame…unless you get signed then do it for the money, the girls and the drugs but mostly the money!
4. Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?
A: Opening for Bad Religion, was just an amazing experience.
5. On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.
A: playing at a club in Signal Hill, it was the bartender, bar back, door guy, the other band and us….all night.

8. Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… (Like their hobbies or something like that)
A: Josh is a spot on Michael Jackson impersonator, Greg is an amazing hip hop DJ, and Carlos draws with sick kids.
9. Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls. Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?
A: That’s easy, Mrs. Howell because you don’t have to put so much work into it plus you know she’s gotta be crazy in bed, refined ladies of culture often are!
10.Our last question is called Shout It Out Loud. It’s where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and SHOUT IT OUT LOUD
A: Why the Hell isn’t Rick Moranis in more movies?!
Michael Sweet interview from Powerline
This a great interview and the guy asked all the right questions. Michael Sweet is candid and open. I give him props for saying he hasn’t been in a christian record store in 20 years. I haven’t either. The music to me is unexciting and a copy of most secular bands. No one hardly stands out on their own…
chuck
chcuk@kickacts.com
Here is an excerpt.
I mean, do you think Christian rock is in a better place than it was 30 years ago?
Sweet: No. No, I don’t. I always view Christian rock and music differently than a lot of other people do. For saying these kinds of things I get referred to as a pompous jerk and someone who’s just not nice. But I speak from the heart and I am very open and very honest. I just think that a lot of times Christian rock is every bit — if not more so — a cookie cutter business. Sometimes I question whether any of these bands are really Christian. And I don’t mean that in a judgmental way. I just mean that in the sense that: ‘Oh wow, I couldn’t get a major recording deal, so I’m gonna go get a Christian deal. Because that’s easy.’ And you get so many of thee bands and you meet them one-on-one and you start having a conversation with them about religion or spirituality and they have no clue what you are talking about. They’re looking like deer in the headlights. And it’s like ‘Wow. Okay.’ And I’ve seen this personally. I’ve come across it personally — and I won’t mention names — and it’s kind of sad, the state of where we’re at. So many bands, clawing their way to the top, and fighting like it’s a competition. I listen to this band and then listen to the next band, and I couldn’t tell the two apart. So many bands sound the same. Every now and then there’s a special band that comes out and you’re like ‘Wow, they’re amazing.’ That’s few and far between, in my opinion. Groups like Switchfoot are amazing. They come out, you know who it is when you hear them, they have their own unique sound, like POD when they hit the scene. But not a lot of bands that come out have that kind of power and uniqueness and that originality.
Do you find that Christian record stores still carry a lot of the CDs?
Sweet: I don’t know. I haven’t stepped foot in a Christian record store in, I don’t know, maybe 20 years. So I’d definitely be the wrong guy to ask that question.

Kickacts interviews Bob Pressner!
Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web.
My name is Bob Pressner. I’m a singer-songwriter out of Boca Raton, FL. You can find my catalogue of music and music videos on YouTube. I have over 20 million views on a lot of my music videos and have really made my mark in music through YouTube and social media. I also had a Comcast Live OnDemand special which can also be found on YouTube air last year and it ranked #1.
Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?
Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Michael Hedges are a few of my favorites.
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?
Avoid anyone who tells you that you can get rich quick. Music is a business just like any other and it requires work, commitment, persistence, and patience. For the most part you don’t become a huge success overnight. Beware of those who tell you that you will…
Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?
I played the Sundance Film Festival last year that was quite a thrill. That was probably my favorite.
On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.
Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I guess when I was younger and inexperienced I had a couple of bad shows where maybe I didn’t know how to handle playing a set right or a drunk crowd or something like that…no great stories come to mind.
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?
I love watching almost any sport, but really love playing golf. No stamp or hat collection…and sure, I think I could probably draw some nice lookin’ boobs if necessary.
What do you think about the present music scene or lack of?
Looks like music has really blown up on the Internet and in all things social media related. However, even with the success of YouTube, it’s still a struggle to monetize music today, even if you have millions of fans who subscribe to your channel.
Tell us something about you that we wouldn’t expect to hear… (Like weird hobbies or something like that)
I once hosted my own TV show. That was pretty cool. It was years ago, but I still got it! In fact, I’d like to host my own show again down the road!
Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls. Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?
Can I not have all 3?
Our last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

KickActs interviews Garret Rein!
Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web?
I am a solo-artist who creates songs based on emotions exhibited through different situations. You may check me out at http://www.reverbnation.com/garretrein, or http://www.facebook.com/garretreinsolo, http://www.rocker81.bandcamp.com
Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?
I have so many to list and some just all together play great make music or I become very emotional when listening to their songs. This includes Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, Steven Tyler, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Ozzy Osbourne, Jason Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Joan Jett, Cheryl Crow, Waylon Jennings, Tom Petty, Aaron Lewis, Brandon Boyd, and so fourth
Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?
Play because your heart tells you to. Music is a way of expressing your emotions and it becomes easier that way. Don’t play just to be a rockstar, play because you can escape with a story through instruments and singing.
Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?
Performing at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood was awesome. Playing solo I was extremely nervous but I pulled through and had a blast. Got to see all the pictures of famous rock stars posted on their walls. That was neat!
On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.
Probably a local gig at the Saloon where the set up was not pleasing and I struggled to hear my voice over the P.A. And my guitar was turned up too loud.
Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?
Well I certainly dont draw pictures of boobs but I do draw. In high school I aced all my drawing and art classes. I love nature and exotic pets, used to have many growing up. Tattoos, guitars, and cars I’ve always been fascinated with as well!
What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?
Well the music scene itself I think has changed a lot over the years. There are more main stream bands than ever before. Its like a big following year after year. What ever happened to the real rock n roll music where each band got a rise to stardom. Not today, as the internet took that phase over.
The last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!
Well it would be a good time to say that aside from my first 2 singles, there will definitely be an improvement on the next 4 tracks. I had lots of anxiety while recording the first track not knowing how it all will turn out. Next time I go into the studio it will be easier as I know what to expect. My next 4 songs will be Cosmic Future, Cure Racism, Anxiety, and Keep On Pushin. All together I have about 20 songs that need to be recorded professionally mixed and mastered.

John Corabi has said it best for everyone in the record industry….
“I sing my songs and play my guitar and drink my tequila and I’m the town jester just trying to show everyone a good time. I was not aware that there was an age limit on that. The artists I grew up with — Paul McCartney, THE WHO and a shitload of other bands — didn’t get that memo to retire either”
John
For the entire interview with John Go here: Legendaryrockinterviews.com
Have you noticed that really only classic rock bands are filling the arenas still? KISS, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden etc… Other than select Country artists and bubble gum Shawn Cassidy type boy singers like Beiber, Classic rock is still out selling new rock bands and filling those seats. So before you excuse your self because the guys in the band are over 40, you need to re school yourself.
You are never to old to ROCK!
