Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

Patty Griffin, Ani Difranco, Damien Rice, Radiohead, The White Stripes, Jeff Buckley, Springsteen, The Eagles, Incubus…bands and singer/songwriters who write their own music have inspired us all.

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

If the desire is in you to make music, do it!  We all went to college, got jobs, and lived with regret until now.  Go for it when you are young…there is always time for a 9-5.  Avoid the pitfall of saying so and so is better, so why even try…don’t listen, someone will like what you create.

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Playing the TEDx after party in our town was pretty incredible for a first time gig!  I was so intimidated, but honored at the same time!

On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.

Worse gig, turned out to be a good night in the long run…it was a cold, rainy, February eve, we had a steady audience throughout the night of about 10-15 folks…but Tim approached us after that gig asking if we needed a drummer, so it turned out to be not so bad after all.

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

I teach yoga, 3rd grade, and have a child.

Tim is an engineer, and Jesse is a comic artist who does draw boobs at times.  I can get you a drawing.

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

The scene in the Upstate of SC  is growing, and down in Charleston, it is smoking!

Tell us something about each of your band members that we wouldn’t expect to hear… Like their hobbies or something like that…

Laura-certified yoga teacher

Tim-will wrap your body

Jesse-has his own comic book series

Hypothetical situation. You’re stranded on Gilligan’s island and you get to hook up with only one of the girls… Is it Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell and why?

I am all about the professor…

Our last question  is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

Support local music, businesses, artists!

KickActs interviews Garret Rein!

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Welcome to Kick Acts. Tell us a little about yourself and your band and were you can be found at on the web?

I am a solo-artist who creates songs based on emotions exhibited through different situations.  You may check me out at http://www.reverbnation.com/garretrein, or http://www.facebook.com/garretreinsolo, http://www.rocker81.bandcamp.com

garret
Who are your musical heroes, influences & why?

I have so many to list and some just all together play great make music or I become very emotional when listening to their songs.  This includes Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, Steven Tyler, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Ozzy Osbourne, Jason Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Joan Jett, Cheryl Crow, Waylon Jennings, Tom Petty, Aaron Lewis, Brandon Boyd, and so fourth

Do you have any advice for someone just getting started in playing music? Any pitfalls they should avoid?

Play because your heart tells you to.  Music is a way of expressing your emotions and it becomes easier that way. Don’t play just to be a rockstar, play because you can escape with a story through instruments and singing.

Do you have a greatest gig story you’d like to share?

Performing at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood was awesome.  Playing solo I was extremely nervous but I pulled through and had a blast. Got to see all the pictures of famous rock stars posted on their walls. That was neat!

On the same token as the above question. How about a “worse gig” ever story.

Probably a local gig at the Saloon where the set up was not pleasing and I struggled to hear my voice over the P.A. And my guitar was turned up too loud.

Do you have any other hobbies other than playing music? Collect stamps? Collect hats from off the side of the road? Draw pictures of boobs?

Well I certainly dont draw pictures of boobs but I do draw.  In high school I aced all my drawing and art classes.  I love nature and exotic pets, used to have many growing up.  Tattoos, guitars, and cars I’ve always been fascinated with as well!

What do you think about the present music scene or lack of? Care to address that?

Well the music scene itself I think has changed a lot over the years.  There are more main stream bands than ever before. Its like a big following year after year. What ever happened to the real rock n roll music where each band got a rise to stardom.  Not today, as the internet took that phase over.

The last question is called “Shout It Out Loud”. It’s were you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. So go ahead and “SHOUT IT OUT LOUD”!

Well it would be a good time to say that aside from my first 2 singles, there will definitely be an improvement on the next 4 tracks.  I had lots of anxiety while recording the first track not knowing how it all will turn out.  Next time I go into the studio it will be easier as I know what to expect.  My next 4 songs will be Cosmic Future, Cure Racism, Anxiety, and Keep On Pushin. All together I have about 20 songs that need to be recorded professionally mixed and mastered.

Pat Ballard… Authentic Home Grown Music

google.com, pub-2427795083793513, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0

Like everyone else probably does, I was scrolling through Facebook the other day looking at all the different posts and I came across one of Pat Ballard’s posts about him putting his songs up on ReverbNation. Pat happens to be the main DJ over at Madisonville’s on Power Rock 93.9 WKTG. He can be heard on the “Out to Lunch” program…But he is also a Singer and Songwriter.

And so like I usually do when I see a local video or music player showcasing local talent I give it a listen. Most of the time the songs are “ok”. Not that I am an authority of music. I just know what I like and don’t like… I tried to “make it” in the business and despite some close calls nothing ever came through. So here I am still trying and running to Nashville all the time… but back to my story about Pat. I saw Pat’s ReverbNation player and I hit the play button…

I gave it a listen and man do I have to say “WOW!!!”,

His music is kinda folksy, honest, heart felt, Americana, and more… It reminded me of John Melloncamp and his Midwest “feel”. It’s not Hollywood. Nothing wrong with Hollywood but Hollywood for the most part is fake. Pat’s music is real, down home stuff. You can sit on a front porch and enjoy it with a glass of lemonade or cold beer and watch the sun go down.

His influences? I dunno but I hear Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, Willie Nelson, John Melloncamp, Tom Petty,  Bob Dylan and maybe some Michael Stipe all wrapped up in there just to name a few… And those are good influences to have.

If have a few minutes here is the ReverbNation player. Sit back and hit play. I don’t think you will be disappointed. I keep hitting the repeat button on it. My favorite is the “Back Home Blues”. So as I tip back a glass of cold beer and sit on my front porch!  Cheers!

chuck
